Evaluating a NUC: What to Look For
We love hearing your positive feedback about our spring NUCs, and we also take responsibility when a colony isn’t quite at its best. After all, with live animals, there are no guarantees of a grand prize every time. However, a great bee supplier with conscientious practices will consistently deliver more successes than failures! To help you assess a spring NUC, here are a few tips to give you the tools you need.
It may seem obvious, but not all NUCs are created equal. A NUC might look picture-perfect—or it might look a bit underwhelming. The initial appearance is important, but it’s not always a true reflection of future progress. How your NUC was prepared and how your queen was raised are much stronger indicators of success.
Keep in mind that your supplier is managing hundreds of hives and moving resources between them to give each NUC the best possible chance at thriving. By understanding the habits and motivations of your supplier, you’ll have a better grasp of what to expect from your colony moving forward.
At the end of the day, beekeeping is an adventure, and every colony has its own story to tell. With these insights, you’ll be well on your way to evaluating your NUC like a pro!
